Why a Woman Who is Not Pregnant may Miss Her Periods

Missed Period in ChicagoA woman can expect about 11-13 menstrual cycles each year especially if their menstrual cycles are regular. However, menstrual periods may stop if one is pregnant. While this is easier to understand, it could be terrifying as well if a young woman misses the menstrual periods and the pregnancy test is negative.

For this reason, every woman should know why she may miss her periods when she is not pregnant. Women’s Aid Center lists three common reasons below.

Anovulation

Anovulation is a situation where the ovaries are unable to release mature eggs. It’s a major factor in most infertility cases today and a common cause of missed periods. Women who are not ovulating and they have not reached menopause should seek fertility help. Thyroid problems, anxiety, polycystic ovarian syndrome and stress are some causes of anovulation. Using hormonal birth control drugs for a long time could also be a possible cause.

Pituitary Tumors

Non-cancerous benign tumors in the pituitary gland called prolactinomas may cause missed periods or irregular cycles in pre-menopausal women. These influence the pituitary gland to produce excess prolactin hormone, a hormone that stimulates the production of breast milk. Excess amounts of prolactin in the blood alter ovary functions and reduce estrogen levels in the body, causing irregular, missed periods or even infertility.

Eating Disorders

Eating disorders do not only affect your menstrual periods but also your overall health. People who have bulimia nervosa vomit in order to lose weight while those with anorexia nervosa starve themselves to maintain a slim figure. What they fail to understand is that either of these affects their reproductive health. Too thin people have few fat cells and this leads to inadequate estrogen production that eventually hinders healthy ovulation.

Most women get scared when their periods delay for months especially if they are not pregnant. They hardly know some of the reasons behind the delayed or missed periods. According to reproduction specialists, the above are enough reasons a woman can miss her periods while her pregnancy tests are still negative.
