Preventing Teeth Sensitivity: Simple Ways to Mitigate the Pain

Cause of Teeth SensitivityThe reason for sensitive teeth is one of the many unknowns of the dental world. The actual cause is often a mystery, especially if the numbing pain is sudden and hits you out of nowhere. Could it be the food you are eating or is it something else entirely?

It may be easy to mitigate the pain, but before addressing it, find out what is causing the sensitivity in the first place.

If you have a diet that is high in acid, your teeth may experience a higher form of sensitivity. Food and beverages that are acidic include:

  • Orange Juice

  • Wine
  • Fermented and Pickled Foods
  • Aged Cheeses

Sodas and high sugar beverages are the easiest to control. If you are already experiencing some form of sensitivity, cut back on fizzy drinks. Drink water instead; aside from it having virtually no acid (and no calories); it may clean your mouth and teeth, which is great since most acidic food may stain teeth.

Similarly, cut back on sugary food like candies, as not only do they contribute to tooth sensitivity, they may also cause bacteria to proliferate in your mouth.

Mitigating the Pain

Now that you know where your tooth sensitivity comes from, mitigating and completely preventing the pain is easier.

One way to prevent tooth sensitivity is to commit to good oral health every day. This means religiously brushing your teeth after every meal, as well as flossing. Be gentle when you brush, though; too much brushing may wear the enamel of your teeth, which in turn causes more sensitivity.

Get a dental check-up at least once every month. The sensitivity in your teeth may not just be because of acidic food, but also because of existing problems.
